When Beethoven finished his monumental Ninth Symphony with a final movement featuring chorus and a quartet of solo singers, he did something unprecedented in the history of the symphony. Till then, the symphony as a genre had been a purely instrumental. It expressed abstract feelings at best, but not specific content.
