General Electric (GE) on Nagykanizsa plans to cast off 227 employees in two phases.
The first group of workers will be dismissed on December 19, reported state newswire MTI. Followed by an agreement on the details of dismissals, GE announced a declaration of intent 30 days prior to the actual notice. The factory committee, the trade union and the employers were informed that, in the first phase, GE will discharge 193 workers and, after January 15, another 34 employees will have to leave the company.The Consumer and Industrial department of GE announced at the end of October that its Hungarian production needs restructuring to preserve its competitiveness in the European market. In its press release GE said eight out of its nine Hungarian premises will be affected by the restructuring; production volume will be decreased in Budapest, Kisvárda and Nagykanizsa, Hajdúböszörmény and Zalaegreszeg businesses and the Gyôr factory, employing 98 workers will be shut down entirely. The Consumer and Industrial department of GE employs altogether 10,000 workers; after the restructuring the number of employees will be decreased to 9,500.
