Hungary will increase the GDP proportionate amount of its defence expenses by 0.2 percent in the next five years, contrary to earlier plans, defence minister Imre Szekeres announced last Thursday (Oct 9), the first day of the informal NATO meeting in Budapest. (The 2009 draft budget allocated Ft338bn or $1.82bn). The undertaking pleased NATO chief-secretary Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (pictured), who visited Budapest attending the summit of 26 member states and 16 other countries participating in NATO operations. Main discussions of the meeting were focused on Afghanistan and Kosovo and changes to the structure of the organization itself.
