Visa-free status within sight

Hungarian citizens will be able to travel to the US visa-free for up to 90 days from November, Hungarian daily Népszabadság wrote last Friday (Oct 10). Minister of VWP (Visa Waiver Program) Michel Chertoff, who plans to visit Hungary during his trip to Europe did not give an exact date for Hungarian accession to the visa-waiver program but expected it “in the very near future”. Travelers covered by the visa waiver will have to register online prior to travel from January, 2009. The American electronic travel authorization system, however, will not replace biometric scanning of all 10 fingerprints and the photograph taken on entering the US. Earlier this year Hungary was rumored to be granted a visa-free status before the end of George W. Bush’s presidential term in January, 2009.
