LMP to garner protest votes |
Presenting a new alternative to voters tired and disappointed of the bipolar political landscape in Hungary, a new political formation stepped onto the scene last week.
“Politics can be different!” (Lehet más a politika!) is a grassroots initiative, that will turn into a political party, if sufficient support is earned, the founders said. The movement, abbreviated as LMP, already has a nationwide network based on supporting green, civil and social rights NGOs. Headed by András Schiffer, Péter Rauschenberger and Benedek Jávor, the movement’s message is to reform Hungarian political life. At the current stage, some 300 members and supporters finance the activity of the organization. According to founder András Schiffer, the party will offer alternatives in green, human-rights and social policies. The brochure of the movement states that, LMP strives to curb political and economic corruption. “This is an experiment,” explained Rauschenberger to Hungarian news site Hírszerzô. “The new party is to be financed from contributions of supporters. If we can gather say 200-300 million forints by January, we will run on the 2009 European Parliament elections,” he added. The organization has also tried to draw attention by projecting its logo onto the Parliament building from across the Danube on Monday, Oct 6. Although the event was granted permission as a “demonstration,” the action was cancelled by the police.
