The new, modern sewage farm in Sopron was completed as a part of a larger investment financed by the EU’s Cohesion Fund on November 10.
The Ft4.4 billion investment serving more than 60 thousand inhabitants of 6 settlements puts an end to the pollution of Lake Fertő as well as of the ground and the groundwater and also new areas in the region will become eligible for construction. 90% of the investment was financed by the Cohesion Fund and the remaining 10 by the municipality of Sopron. Previous to the project four sewage farms were operating in the Sopron region, in Sopron, Sopronkôhida, Fertôrákos and Nagycenk. Three of these had outdated technologies, which raised health safety issues and also they were not able to sustain the constantly developing region anymore. With the completion of the new investment over the last four years the region was able to shut down the Sopronkôhida sewage farm and the Fertôrákos farm was converted to a sewage pre-treatment facility. Now only healthy, clean water is directed back to the lake. The soiled water previously went to the Fertôrákos and Sopronkôhida works now redirected to the new sewage farm and the Nagycenk factory has been partly disencumbered too, which helped in increasing its cleaning efficiency. In the new Sopron works the cleaning of the soiled water is done through a closed system.
