Jazzy Gold is a great CD, albeit with a bit misleading title. The compilation features mostly funk tracks
Hungary’s first Jazz-focused commercial radio station, Radio Jazzy has published its newest episode of its compilation CDs, titled Jazzy gold. The compilation features 16 tracks, giving a preview of the radio’s selection of music styles: a bit of smooth jazz, lounge, swing, a pinch of latin style and lots and lots of funk. While the selection is not classical, “heavyweight” jazz, and standards are mostly substituted by funky classics, such as “Street life” and “Club Tropicana”, it might be a perfect choice of background music for lengthy discussions or for driving. Our personal favorite was Nils Landgren Funk Unit’s House Party. Swedish musician Nils Landgren has been a natural-born music talent since the age of six. At 13 he layed his hands and lips on the trombone and was hooked for life. With his group, Funk Unit Nils is a regular guest of Budapest jazz podiums as well. Bossasonic’s cover of Club Tropicana is also a great choice. The remake of the classic Wham! hit, has the subtlety of South America (against the original’s dominant disco rythms), and Bossasonic singer Daniela Del Core really is someone who should sing this song. The compilation’s last track, Chantz’s cover of swing classic It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing, is a bit weird selection. Although the track is, in itself, all okay, it’s not easy to handle this tune as an organic part of this CD. The CD is a perfect present for anyone who likes listening to Jazzy Radio.
