The Parliament has accepted the performing arts law that will allocate an extra Ft3.3 billion support for theaters and other performing arts institutions. The bill was supported by SzDSz and MDF besides the governing Socialists.
The bill, entering into force from next March, regulates the financing support of theatres, music bands, and ballet and dance companies, also including the special employment law of actors, musicians and dancers. The year 2009 will be a transitional term; the funds of the new financing system will be made available for the performers from 2010, said Márta Schneider, state secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Education. The aim of the regulation is to support these institutions and companies according to their professional achievements. The bill also intends to make the financing of the sector more transparent and predictable. According to the bill a 22-member Performing Art Council will be established to suggest, draw up and draft decisions for the minister. The regulation also includes the setting up of a registry system; only those organizations will be entitled for funds that are registered with the authorities.
