Daimler AG chooses suppliers

Despite the financial crisis, Daimler AG proceeds with its Hungarian investment by picking its local suppliers.

Daimler AG starts choosing its suppliers for its Kecskemét factory from next spring. The suppliers will provide the new auto model 3 that will be exclusively manufactured in Kecskemét from 2012, said Eberhard Gloger, leading supplies manager of Daimler AG. “Quality, material- and energy-efficiency, innovation and excellent logistics – these are the most important expectations of the Mercedes factory of its suppliers, Gloger said at the car industry suppliers forum organized by Hungarian Investment and Trade Agency (ITDH). More than 500 companies were present at the forum held last Friday. Daimler AG plans to manufacture the next generation of the A- and B-class models out of which model 3 will be exclusively produced in Hungary.
Last year’s revenue of the Hungarian car industry suppliers’ sector consisting of 630 companies, employing 110 thousand workers, was Ft15.9 billion. The export ratio of the sector is 90% providing 20% of the entire Hungarian export portfolio. The industry was hit hard by the crisis; the companies dismissed approximately 4500 workers till the end of November.
A total of 14 of the 20 major global suppliers are present in Hungary. Mercedes purchased Ft600 million in products from Hungarian suppliers last year, while BMW spent EUR 800 million.
In 2002 the national suppliers’ ratio was 65% in the cars produced in Hungary; according to expectations, this should increase to 85% by 2015.
