His is an evocative recollection of the bus ride between London and Budapest.
The Journey
By Eyal Opher
The crowded, evergreen landscape of Britain gives way to frothy aquamarine seagull territory only to reform into a soulless blend of grey motorway, grey sky and grey fields. Whilst trying to sleep I consider the bizarre breed that commutes by coach for 27 hours from London to Budapest. It?s flightless, boasts no laptop but is dependent on flawless cell-phone networks and delights in the phenomenon of ringtones. It consumes copious amounts of fruit and digests crosswords, foreign language course books, story-tapes and stugeron* pills non-stop.
"We arrive to Liege," crackles the nuts and bolts version of the lengthy spiel previously carried out in Hungarian. Unfortunately the translation amounts to "stay put and we?ll soon be off again", not "alight, freshen up, wander around and stretch your aching legs".
Alas, the engine catches, the coach lurches, salami sandwiches perfume the air and the air conditioning fails. We sit.
*A travel sickness prophylactic which sends you to sleep.
