The new Treehugger Dan's Bookstore & Lounge in Lázár utca, right behind the Opera House, is much more than just a second hand bookshop. On the comfortable couches and amidst a wide range of English language books, one can find a soothing calm and a friendly atmosphere to be grateful for in the middle of a busy town. But what makes this venue more special is the fact that it is one of the two spots in Budapest that serves Free Trade organic coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The other place is, unsurprisingly, Dan's as well, and he takes great pride in his small but significant contribution to the Fair Trade industry, famous for growing organic crops and for taking good care of the land and the workers. The owner of this noble enterprise arrived to Hungary from Maine, USA, several years ago. He started his first bookstore (and café) in District VI, on Csengery utca, and his business has been so successful that last week he opened this second venue. Walking between the shelves, it is easy to find any genre from classics to children's books, and there is also a fair choice of publications aimed at those who are in the process of learning the language. Dan's smoke-free atmosphere is also a venue for cultural and art events including film and poetry evenings, book launches, Greenpeace Fridays, story telling and more, many listed in The Budapest Sun. And since Dan is such a resolute environmentalist, his new bookstore also offers bicycles for rent.
