Protest against Chanukkah |
György Budaházy, extreme right leader, wanted to protest against Hanuka in front of the Dohány utca Synagogue on December 18, reported Hungarian Daily, Népszabadság. Budaházy requested permission for the demonstration, as a private person which was refused by the police on the basis that it would cause traffic problems.
Opposition Fidesz and minor Christian Democratic KNDP both protested against Budaházy's request. Zoltán Balogh, chairman of the human rights, minority and civil and religion committee of the Parliament and Zsolt Semjén, chairman of KNDP issued a press release saying, "We indignantly refuse that György Budaházy and László Toroczkai, professional demonstration organizers, wanting to protest in front of the Synagogue of Dohány utca with plainly intimidating intentions. Everyone has a right to express their political beliefs within the legal boundaries even on street demonstrations. However we cannot make the sacred places of religious groups the battlefield of politics. To insult the dignity of either the Basilica of Esztergom, the Great Church of Debrecen or any other church or shrine righteously upsets all benevolent people, religious or not." Budaházy became known for organizing the Erzsébet bridge blockade in 2002, for which he was convicted. Since then he is participated in the organization of various extreme right movements.
