The Toldi re-opens
From Oct 2, the Toldi continues its tradition of showing good quality films. What has changed, though, is its leap into the future with highly improved technology, including digital screening, and the comfortable, modernized surroundings. Doors re-open with the Hungarian film The Detective (Attila Gigor), and with the much acclaimed biopic Control (Anton Corbijn), which takes a bleak, but tender and funny look at the late Ian Curtis, the lead singer of cult Brit band Joy Division.
Nasty violence
Set in 2012, when US economy is in ruins, the for-profit prison on Terminal Island must be the worse place to be, where a “kill-or-be-killed” car race provides the ultimate entertainment. Ex-con Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is back behind bars when convicted, wrongly this time, for killing the mother of his baby girl. All Hell breaks loose when he is forced to take part in the violent race to survive, but what excuses his actions is the hope of reunion with his child. Death Race is in Hungarian cinemas from Oct 16.
For the boys
Eagle Eye tackles the current issue of digital public surveillance, through an implausible action story that mysteriously turns two innocent strangers, Jerry (Shia LeBeuf) and Rachel (Michelle Monaghan), into most wanted fugitives. The movie was executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, but that should not raise your expectations. At cinemas from Oct 2.
